A Look Back…

I’ve been blessed to have spent the past 44 years on this shiny blue ball known as Earth; in this lifetime there have been some truly remarkable events. Here are some listed below for your reading pleasure:

  • Vietnam War begins in the 1960’s.
  • First-ever televised presidential debate between Kennedy and Nixon in 1961.
  • The Space race begins between Russia and the U.S. in the 1960’s.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. made the speech, “I have a Dream” on August 28, 1963.
  • President Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963, by Lee Harvey Oswald.
  • The first Civil Rights bill was passed to stop racial discrimination in 1964.
  • President Johnson ordered bombing raids on North Vietnam and Americans begin protesting the war in 1965. This was also the year that the world’s first roofed stadium was built, the Houston Astrodome.
  • People in the Watts neighborhood riot in 1965 Los Angeles.
  • Psychedelic clothing is a hit in 1966.
  • Walt Disney, the creator of Mickey Mouse and a pioneer of animated films, died of cancer on December 15, 1966.
  • The first heart transplant was performed by Dr. Christiaan Barnard in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1967.
  • The first hand-held calculator was invented in 1967 by Texas Instruments, at a cost of $2,500 a piece.
  • Civil Rights Leader Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Two months later, Robert Kennedy, John F. Kennedy’s brother was assassinated, too.
  • Nearly half a million people headed over to a 600 acre farm in New York for the Woodstock Festival in 1969. Many top rock musicians were there. It lasted three days, a weekend of music, love and peace.
  • July 20, 1969, 4:18 p.m., one of the biggest events of history happened. Apollo 11 landed on the moon, astronauts aboard. Neil Armstrong’s famous speech for the historical steps was, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
  • Four students were killed at Kent State University by a sniper in 1970.
  • The Beatles released “Let It Be,” their last album together, in 1970.
  • Apollo XIII explosion in space; all crewmen return to Earth safely after a harrowing experience.
  • Mark Spitz wins seven gold medals in swimming events at the Olympics in 1971.
  • Richard Nixon resigned from the Presidency in 1974.
  • Hank Aaron breaks Babe Ruth’s home-run record in 1974.
  • The last troops leave Vietnam in 1975.
  • America celebrates its 200th birthday in 1976.
  • STAR WARS debuts on the big screen in 1977.
  • Elvis dies of a drug overdose in 1977.
  • The suicide and murder of 900 people at Jonestown in 1978; they drank cyanide-flavored fruit drink, and leader Jim Jones shot himself.
  • Disco became all the rage in the late 1970’s, as did pet rocks.
  • Margaret Thatcher becomes Britain’s first woman prime minister in 1979.
  • A nuclear accident occurred at Three Mile Island on March 28, 1979.
  • Charles and Diana were married in a worldwide royal event in 1981.
  • President Ronald Reagan survived an assassination attempt on March 30, 1981.
  • May 1981 – Pope John Paul survived a similar assassination attempt.
  • In June, 1981, all major league baseball players went on strike. No games were played until August 1, 1981.
  • Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1981.
  • The first Jarvik-7 heart was implanted in December 1982.
  • October 19, 1987 – Stock market crash on Black Monday.
  • America endures the 1988 drought.
  • The 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill was the costliest and largest environmental disaster.
  • April 25, 1990 – Hubble telescope launched.
  • The Gulf War began in 1991.
  • Dolly the sheep was cloned in 1997.
  • August 31, 1997 – Princess Diana dies in a car accident.
  • December 31, 1999 – Y2K was an official bust.

And, the 2000’s have just begun. Wow.
Lots of memories. Lots of good times. Lots of life-changing events.

    Well, since I am not as old as you, I only remember HEARING about most of these things. LOL But I do remember DISCO, Charles and Diana’s wedding…I skipped school to watch it on TV, and of course the tragic death of Diana.

    Happy Birthday Richard. I love you and am proud to have you in my life.

    P.S. I had a pet rock named Virgil. LOL
